Lisa Malick

This is my ninth year teaching, and my first year out of the brick-and-mortar classroom. I decided to make the leap out after having difficulty managing chronic health issues. Every sneeze or sniffle from my students would land me in the hospital for a week or more, and that was not fair to anyone. I began my virtual teaching career a few months ago by teaching English to students in China, and really got into my grove teaching virtually! Not only was my health returning, but I was feeling more effective than ever…more how I remembered education being when I first began. While listening to an NPR show one day, I felt a connection as Stephen Colbert described a recent shift in his own career, describing little difference between captivating a large live audience and an audience sitting miles away. It is the quality of the subject matter, not the physical presence of the audience. I think about his words every day when I transmit my positive energy through Internet cables, rather into the empty space of a room.

Fun Fact: I’ve been a competitive swimmer since childhood and swam in college. Now, I race marathon distance swims (up to 24 miles!) and prone paddleboard races (on your stomach or knees, no paddle) and represent Surftech boards in California. Between Proximity, Surftech, and teaching in China, I am constantly functioning out of many different time zones…what is time but an illusion!
